There are always varying statistics about levels of poverty and education in the developing world. There is an old quote about statistics that warns that they are often used in the same way a drunk uses a lamp post, for support not illumination. The reality is that governments usually massively overstate the literacy, education and economic levels of their population so that they will look good in the eyes of the world.
The fact is that for the rural indigenous population of Guatemala illiteracy is staggeringly high and the opportunity for a brighter future for the children is dim. Child Aid is working hard to change this through the most powerful vehicles of all literacy and education.
