Children Given a Chance

Becas (Scholarship) Program

Opening the Doors To School

Child Aid

Each year Child Aid funds hundreds of scholarships that enable impoverished children to attend school. Although many poor parents know that education offers their children hope for a better future, and though these same parents sacrifice as much as possible to make this happen, schools in Guatemala are not completely free. In rural indigenous areas, many parents simply cannot afford the fees, clothing and supplies that are required for attendance.

Gratitude for Learning
However, when given the opportunity, many of these same children go on to become the best in their class. They seem to understand that these scholarships open avenues of great opportunity, avenues that their parents never had. In short, the children have gratitude that translates into learning. Absent this opportunity for an education, the cycle of poverty continues and another generation of children moves into a life of grinding poverty.

Specific Scholarships

Preschool, Primary & Secondary-School Programs
Child Aid’s scholarship program began in the town of El Tejar, where we continue to work with our local partner FUNDIT. This program provides scholarships for over 106 students at CEDIN, a Montessori type preschool. Child Aid also provides scholarships to 100 students in the primary and secondary level public schools of El Tejar.

Women’s Programs
With our partner PROBIGUA Child Aid provides scholarships to young women at Socorro, a school for future indigenous teachers.

Student Library Assistants
With our local community library partners we provide support to students who work as assistants in the community libraries. These students are chosen by the local librarians based upon their committment to education and assisting other students.

Program for the Hearing Impaired
Finally, all of the hearing impaired children at the CORAL Therapy/School Program in Oaxaca, Mexico are on full or partial scholarships funded by Child Aid and its suporters.
