Book of the Month Club

For only $25 a month you can join our Book of the Month Club. Your monthly donation will allow us to put a small shelf of reading material into a classroom — a classroom that has never before had books to read. It will give a dedicated teacher resources to help open the minds of her young students. The locally made wooden shelf will last for years and will include a small plaque with your name as well as the teacher’s.

What you see in this photo is one of our staff, Norma Guzman, modeling an active reading exercise for a rural teacher. What may not be so obvious is that the book Norma is using for this reading is the only book in the classroom.

While we give all the teachers who attend our trainings a few donated books for them to use for group readings, these few books are so precious that they are kept under lock and key by the teachers. There is no possibility for the teacher to allow students to read on their own in the classroom. We have begun a pilot program to provide small shelves of age appropriate books to classrooms where the teacher has shown exceptional passion and drive. These books are to be used to allow the teacher to permit students to have a chance to read a book during free classroom time.

The program has multiple benefits:
* It allows the teacher to bring student reading directly into the classroom
* It reinforces the teacher’s active reading exercises
* It rewards and provides incentive to teachers who show the greatest interest and promise
* It allows the teacher to focus more directly on a smaller group of students while other students are reading

In addition to all these benefits, it allows you, our supporter, to distribute your gift over a year’s time and know that at the end of that year a dedicated teacher and a group of young minds will have the chance to read, think and learn in ways they never thought would be possible.
