Reading for Life March 29, 2012 Child Aid helps hundreds of teachers learn how to promote and teach reading more effectively. Children who participate in Reading for Life grow up in extreme poverty. Literacy is critical to helping them improve their lives. LLaquelyn’s mother only made it to 4th grade, but Llaquelyn is now a star reader in her class, thanks to Reading for Life. Through Reading for Life, Child Aid works in remote, neglected schools throughout Guatemala’s indigenous Central Highlands. Reading for Life is the result of over 16 years of literacy work in Guatemala. It was designed with extensive input from teachers in the field. Child Aid’s literacy team helps teachers learn how to engage their students and inspire them to read. An indigenous librarian brings books to a nearby school. Connecting community libraries with rural schools is a key component of Reading for Life. By helping teachers promote reading, we bring the power of literacy to thousands of children.
