Libraries & Literacy May 17, 2012 Nine-year-old Ernesto proudly displays every book he has read in the Child Aid-supported library in his community. We focus our literacy efforts not just on books and libraries, but on creating vibrant reading programs that engage children and inspire them to read. Trained by Child Aid, Rosenda Yac Escún is the librarian in Xesampual, an indigenous K’iché village in Guatemala’s Central Highlands. Child Aid-supported libraries make books accessible and reading fun for children in communities where literacy rates are low. Children work on writing skills as part of a Child Aid literacy program in a village library. Our partner libraries have organized reading programs, but are also places where children read independently and develop literacy skills on there own. Inside a small, Child Aid-supported library, a community elder tells stories to children in his native K’iché, the local indigenous language.
