Guatemalan Election: The Day Our Nation Held Its Breath

By Graciela Landa Pichiyá, Child Aid National Director

Last Sunday, the world watched as Guatemalan President-Elect Bernardo Arévalo was to take office after months of legal efforts by his political enemies to derail his presidency, including last-minute stalling by corrupt leaders who kept the entire nation anxiously waiting.

I watched alongside my countrymen as thousands of supporters gathered in front of Guatemala City’s emblematic Plaza de la Constitución. But day turned into night with no ceremony. Tensions grew. I felt rushes of hope, joy, disappointment and anger as hours passed. Hundreds of protesters tried to break into the congressional buildings to get an explanation for the long delay. More than 500 riot police used shields to push the crowd back. I heard screams. Hours passed.

For a moment, I was desperate! I believed the corrupt government’s long-held plan to derail Arévalo’s presidency was working, and that they were destroying the will and voice, the sovereignty and democracy of my country.

Finally, in the dark, early hours of Monday morning, Bernardo Arévalo was sworn in as president. His ascension signals the brightest dawn for Guatemala!

Arévalo is a progressive academic who says he will face-off with Guatemala’s deeply embedded corrupt leaders. In his first public address to the Guatemalan people, Arévalo said, “There cannot be democracy without social justice and social justice cannot prevail without democracy.”

Arévalo’s spoken philosophy that everyone has the right to a quality education aligns perfectly with Child Aid’s ethos. My dearest hope is that Arévalo’s speeches are not empty words, but will lead directly to urgent action focused on keeping children, especially indigenous girls, in school and learning.

I feel very happy with my nation’s new government. For the first time, corrupt officials have been roundly defeated. Guatemala is at the beginning of a new spring. The people have high expectations, and I hope we are not disappointed again.
