The Girls (In Guatemala) Are Not Okay

I wish I could tell you that, in 2024, indigenous girls in Guatemala were better off than ever. Instead, the opposite is true. Last year, nearly 40,000 school-age girls in my nation between 10 and 19 years of age became mothers themselves, children having children. Following the pandemic, thousands of girls dropped out of school early because their parents died from COVID and they needed to work to support their families.

This worries me and gives me a lot of pain.

In response to these staggering realities, Child Aid launched Guatemalan Girls: The Value of Their Voices. This afterschool reading program introduces girls to global women leaders and builds their confidence to speak up and join discussions.

I was talking with a young student of ours in Totonicapan, and I asked her, ‘Why don’t you say what you think during class discussions”? She looked at me and replied, “because boys make fun of what we girls say.’”

My hope for every girl in Guatemala is that she will be able to fully participate in classroom work without fear, and that the fearlessness that Child Aid cultivates in our programs will embolden girls to share opinions and ideas in their homes and communities and the broader world. We need these girls! They are our brightest future.

Quite simply, Child Aid’s work is lifesaving. When we train teachers to revitalize schools, an entire generation of children receives reading, writing and thinking skills they need to escape poverty, the same crushing poverty that ensnared their mothers and grandmothers before them.

We need these girls! And we need these girls to be bold and educated and ready to lead. Our entire world waits for them with anticipation.
