Juana may not know she’s on the frontlines of a global education crisis, but she is. Many thousands of girls, like Juana in Guatemala, never learn to read and write. Without these basic skills, many children here will inherit a life of poverty, just like their parents and grandparents before them. But for Juana, having a great teacher trained by Child Aid makes all the difference.
Before Child Aid, Juana had trouble reading and writing. But we partnered with Juana’s school, San Ramón Elementary, and coached her teacher, Patricia, through our three-year, award-winning training program. Patricia learned how to assess her students’ reading levels, how to use story maps to help kids understand narratives, and how to ask questions so kids learn how to think critically about what they read.
Patricia helped Juana become a strong reader and writer. And because we deliver thousands of Spanish-language books to Guatemalan classrooms each year, Patricia keeps Juana stocked up with great reads.
Juana even wrote her own book, and won a writing contest at her school!
For Juana, and thousands of children like her in Guatemala, Child Aid provides tools to help them climb out of poverty. Now, Juana can write her own bright future!
