We are proud to announce a partnership with Manschkin Kaffeerösterei, an organic, fairtrade coffee wholesaler with multiple coffee house locations based in Switzerland. Manschkin sponsors the Caserío el Progreso Elementary School in Sololá, Guatemala through our three-year literacy immersion program.
“We feel responsible for all actors along the coffee value chain, especially the most vulnerable: the pickers and the small farmers,” says Founder Stefan Flueckiger. “Working with Child Aid in the communities where we source our beans, we are ensuring our commitment improves the lives of those working families through education.”
Caserío el Progreso Elementary School is a rural school serving 130 students between the ages of 4 and 12. Seven teachers guide these students through the fundamentals of reading, writing and critical thinking skills.
Manschkin’s critical support means students in this school will have new, high-quality nonfiction and fiction books to read, alongside well-trained teachers who know how to assess their students’ skills and support them on their learning journeys.
“In Guatemala, literacy skills can mean the difference between a life lived in severe poverty or a thriving life. Manschkin’s support of these at-risk children means so much to this indigenous community and the families who labor to produce some of the best coffee in the world,” says Child Aid CEO Dr. Nancy Press.
Manschkin Kaffeerösterei is a family run company in Switzerland which values sustainability. Its roasting is done in a climate-friendly way, using state-of-the-art technology and electricity from 100 percent hydropower, CO2-free.
