Child Aid recognizes that education within a systems change model will require investments over many years. We also believe that in economically underdeveloped countries, that it makes more strategic sense to build on the existing infrastructure and that is why we have chosen to invest in public education and teacher training over bricks-and-mortar approaches. This approach aims to ensure that limited resources lead to better sustainability by investing in local educators who are from the communities and committed to their vocation for decades to come.
In the 2025 Center for Global Development conference in October of 2025, titled “The Big Returns to Early Investments in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy,” Lee Crawfurd shares that the average return of $1 invested in early education literacy and numeracy programs leads to $9 benefit in lifetime earnings for those children.

Child Aid students improved 65 percent more than their peers in reading comprehension.
Child Aid evaluates and reports on the results of our programs each year. We take a two-phased approach to evaluation. Phase I focuses on student outcomes. Phase II focuses on teachers and the learning environments they create in their classrooms.

Child Aid partners with over 150 local public primary schools each year to provide literacy training and resources to rural, indigenous communities, primarily in the western highlands of central Guatemala.

Of course, systems change requires bold action by unique and committed individuals and thus we invite you to learn more by clicking on a story below.
