TRAINING Teachers

Transforming education, one teacher at a time.

Our approach centers around basic comprehension and critical thinking skills meant to boost children into becoming independent readers and life-long learners.

an overview

Our intensive, three-year literacy program provides sustained professional development for elementary school teachers.

Hands-on workshops teach teachers new strategies and techniques that make classrooms more interactive and productive. Teachers learn how to equip their students with foundational skills like critical thinking and reading comprehension.

Child Aid trainers lead our teacher workshops, bringing extensive expertise and experience that enables them to assist individuals and groups of teachers in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to improve. Each of our trainers work to ignite the passions of the teachers they work with and leave them with a sustainable toolkit that facilitates their teaching for years to come.

Meet Our Trainers

a new paradigm

Child Aid workshops center techniques that help students not simply retain facts, but become independent learners and critical thinkers who love to learn.

To do this we focus on teaching three foundations: critical thinking, participation and integrated literacy.

This approach prepares students for the real world, giving them the skills they need to succeed. You will often hear our trainers talk about learning to read AND reading to learn – this is they key to our student’s success, it gives children a voice and an understanding of the world around them. We know that literacy is the most powerful tool a teacher can provide a student.

Child Aid workshops help teachers be better at their jobs, and our trainers make the process fun by incorporating hands-on activities that get teachers out of their chairs and actively learning — just like their students!

Teachers attend two workshops per year meant to introduce and reinforce a variety of new classroom tools and techniques. Trainers model various practices during the workshops, giving educators an opportunity to experience the activities as learners first.

Teachers are also given time to reflect on instructional practices and share personal experiences with fellow teachers. This helps them establish a positive context for individual coaching.

Sponsor A Teacher

It takes a lot to put a teacher through three years of career changing training! One way we do this is with the support of individual donors, who sponsor a teacher.

Learn about sponsoring a teacher

Teachers report that once they implement the workshop strategies students are more enthusiastic readers and understand better what they’ve read. Kids participate more in classroom activities and exhibit improved skills, especially vocabulary, writing, and an ability to ask questions and express ideas.

Our work isn’t done until every child receives a quality education.

Child Aid is working diligently. To grow our program, and introduce our model of teacher training and literacy instruction to more schools and communities each year. And we are using evidence of the success of our model to advocate for reforms to teacher training and literacy instruction at the local, state and national levels.

Our scalable program

Since 2010, Child Aid has trained over 3,525 teachers, helping them become skilled and effective educators.
