Providing Books
Stocking Classrooms with a Vital Resource for Learning.
In rural communities where educational resources have always been scarce, Child Aid’s book donation program offers students access to a new world of learning, and an opportunity to develop literacy skills that will last a lifetime.
Children who have access to a variety of engaging books are more motivated to read and more likely
to develop the comprehension and critical thinking skills that are the foundation of literacy. Yet most Guatemalan classrooms are lucky to have one or two books per student, and many of those books are outdated and not suitable for a child learning to read.
That’s why Child Aid donates tens of thousands of Spanish-language books to primary schools each year. For the first time, teachers have colorful, engaging children’s books for classroom activities, literacy instruction and reading promotion.
Our book donation program strives to provide a mixture of reading levels, genres and subject matter to meet the needs of teachers and interests of young readers. We review our book offerings every year and teachers give our staff feedback about which books are the most useful in their classrooms. We offer both fiction and non-fiction titles and help teachers learn to use both in their classrooms.
“Never before have we had books that the kids loved so much, that grabbed their attention, the way the Child Aid books do. The books are very good so the kids become interested in reading.”
