Day 5: Patzité

Our Photo Journal for Day 5

We kicked off the second week of our book tour in the charming town of Patzité, in the department of Quiché. The Millionth Book visited Paxac school where over 150 students enjoyed marimba music, story time and so much more. Join us as we look back on how the students, teachers and parents celebrated the arrival of our one millionth book.

A grand Parade

Today’s event was a true community celebration. Students, teachers and Millie herself paraded through town, inviting one and all to join in.

the arrival

After enjoying the parade, Millie made it to Paxac school where our book character revealed the millionth book and welcomed it to the school, kicking off the celebration in earnest.

It was a party!

Patzité knows how to throw a party! The courtyard of the school was decorated with tons of Millie cut-outs, streamers and paper chains. The floor was covered with the decorative pine needles that denote a special event and all the students were wearing their traditional dress, adorned with their “I MET MILLIE!” pins.

collaborative art

Teachers had hung posters and passed out coloring sheets for students to work on. Bringing the posters to life was a collaborative effort with many students stopping to add to the artwork.

A formal Presentation

The day ended with a bang, with the students returning to the courtyard, where the staff read the book aloud for the students and had a formal presentation, before…

marimba Time!

On the stage they had multiple marimba’s set up, students and teachers played together, bringing a fun element of true joy to the occasion – even Millie got in on the action. Students danced a folklore dance and judging by the looks on the students’ faces, fun was had by all.

Did you know?

The marimba is Guatemala’s national instrument, and it is a symbol of the culture and national pride. Given its size, multiple people can play simultaneously. Songs range from upbeat and lively to slow and solemn. At today’s event, the marimba was accompanied by a flute called the chirimia.

Boys and girls came to the party wearing traditional outfits. The boys wore white shirts with red bandanas and straw hats.

Wait! There’s more…

We hope you enjoyed this recap of day 5, but there is so much more to explore… seven more days of celebration to be specific! Check out another stop on the tour…
