Day 2: San Juan La Laguna

Our Photo Journal for Day 2

Our second stop brought the book to the town of San Juan La Laguna, where we got to dance, play and eat cake with the students at the Palestina school! Join us as we look back on how the students, teachers and parents celebrated the arrival of our one millionth book.

A highly anticipated ARRIVAL

The second stop on our two week book tour was in San Juan La Laguna, in the Department of Sololá. For such a small little book, it arrived in a very big box. All the students were anxious to see what was in the box as it made its way to the stage.

The big reveal

The box made its way to the stage where staff greeted it and led a countdown to opening… Students were surprised to see that it was their classmate Eric in the box who popped out holding the Millionth Book!

Coloring stations

The school set up six coloring stations for the students, each station had different art supplies, and posters and pages for kids to decorate. They did a fantastic job bringing the pages to life.

Some amazing Millie and Mark Art

The posters made at each of the stations were so fun and colorful, they had to be shared. Students and teachers brought them up on stage for all to see.

Cake!

Today’s celebration was made even sweeter by the sharing of some custom cakes for all attendees. The cakes were filled with peaches and strawberry, and carved into slices by the school teachers for all to enjoy.

Storytime

Once the activities were complete, students returned to their classrooms for storytime, where teachers read the Millionth Book to their classes, and talked about the role that books play in learning.

And that’s a wrap

What a great visit we had with Palestina school!

Did you know?

The book arrived through a gateway of palm fronds. The waving of palm fronds is a traditional welcome to a party or celebration. The palm tree that these are from known as K’iip in the Mayan language of Kiche’.

Many of the girls at the party wore a traditional dress and jewelry to the celebration. The dresses are typically red with elaborate multi-colored collars. The necklases that you see on some of the girls are made from antique silver coins from Guatemala.

Wait! There’s more…

We hope you enjoyed this recap of day 2, but there is so much more to explore… seven more days of celebration to be specific! Check out another stop on the tour…
