Day 4: San Francisco El Alto

Our Photo Journal for Day 4

The last visit of our first week was full of fun and energy. We spent the day at Paraje Cuesta Del Aire school in Totonicapan, where students enjoyed meeting Millie and participating in the school’s reading festival.

A high Energy Arrival

Students gathered in the covered courtyard of their school, holding balloons and anxiously awaiting the book’s arrival. A wrapped box on the stage caught student’s attention, until Karina, a fourth grader at the school chosen to open the box, made her way to the stage.

The Big reveal

On stage with her teacher’s narrating, Karina opened the box and revealed the book inside. The students erupted with excitement and Karina took the book around the courtyard so students of all ages could see it up close.

Seven Magical stations

After the official arrival ceremony, the school kicked off their reading festival. Teachers had set up seven stations for the students to visit, each featuring a different reading activity.

Activities included reading out loud, the 100 words challenge, a spelling bee, fill-in-the-blank, bingo, ABC fun, and, our favorite, story time with Millie, where students listened to the Millionth book read out loud and colored pages from the book.

Once the activities were complete, students and teachers walked over to the church square and held up a sign they made saying thank you for the books! And to that we say, THANK YOU! For being part of our millionth book tour!

Did you know?

Students at many elementary schools receive a hot lunch during the school day. The lunch is cooked over a wood fire and typically prepared by the mothers of students at the school. On the day of our visit, teachers were making a local variation on the popular Chow Mein dish. The menu follows the requirements of the Ministry of education.

Wait! There’s more…

We hope you enjoyed this recap of day 4, but there is so much more to explore… seven more days of celebration to be specific! Check out another stop on the tour…
